Hugo Ticciati, violin

Sinfonietta Rīga Orchestra

Conductor Normunds Šnē

Programme: Pēteris Vasks, Arvo Pärt, Jan Sibelius, Henryk Górecki

The programme is centred around a new piece, originally commissioned for this year’s April of Pēteris Vasks’ Music Festival ‒ the violin concerto In Evening Light, first performed by the British violinist Hugo Ticciati in June 2021 in Sweden. The Latvian premiere of Vasks’ Violin Concerto No. 2, attended by the composer himself, will also be an interpretation by Ticciati, this time performing with Sinfonietta Rīga Chamber Orchestra under Normunds Šnē. This is not the charismatic virtuoso violin player’s first time in Cēsis: he has made appearances on numerous occasions, both as solo violinist at Pēteris Vasks’ Festival and performing with his O/Modernt Orchestra.

Hugo Ticciati “Playing the new concerto “In Evening Light” by Peteris is a powerful journey of both transcendence and embodiment. It transports one to spaces of otherworldly bliss and, no less important, brings one face to face with the reality of human suffering: a cyclic journey of rising and falling, of living and dying.”

The title of the violin concerto, shared by the whole programme, perfectly captures the substance of the oeuvre of Pēteris Vasks, the most globally recognised Latvian composer. A source of inspiration for all art forms, evening light is seen as the ideal light, adding warmth, depth, colour and expanded dimensions to things ‒ thus, like the composer Vasks’ music, revealing their ultimate essence.

Alongside music by Pēteris Vasks, the programme will feature pieces by composers sharing his musical and spiritual worldview ‒ Arvo Pärt, Jan Sibelius and Henryk Górecki.
