LNSO and Inga Kalna. MAHELR

Despite its seeming simplicity and traditional nature, compared to his later works, Mahler’s Fourth is full of new discoveries and musical ideas. Inevitably, it has the peculiar aesthetic, beauty, and subtlety characteristic of all Mahler’s works. Central to this work is a specific song recurring through the first three movements, and, in the final part, it bursts into bloom with the help of an angelic soprano – Inga Kalna. We will also hear a Concerto for bassoon by the somewhat obscure Theofanidis – his work is reminiscent of sacral Greek melodies and impressions from Bulgaria and other lands of the Balkan Peninsula. Solo by Latvia’s most renowned bassoon player Jānis Semjonovs.
