ANDREJS OSOKINS. KATRĪNA GUPALO. AFTER MIDNIGHT

The surreality of sleep and the reality of awakening together with subtle and sometimes sudden transitions between these states will be a leitmotif of the programme 'After Midnight'. The singer and pianist Katrina Gupalo and the choreographer and dancer Gabija Bīriņa will explore experiences that range from sweet dreams to nightmares, from sanity to madness. A journey through subconscious terrains of mind will reveal passions, tenderness, paradoxical humour and self-irony.

The concert will include compositions from twentieth-century jazz, blues, musicals and movies belonging to the Golden Age of Hollywood, among them works by Cole Porter, Kurt Weill and Ray Charles. Songs such as 'Need a Little Sugar in my Bowl', 'I Put a Spell on You', 'Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets’and 'Cry me a River' will be reinvented in new instrumental colours. The pieces first performed by Marilyn Monroe, Nina Simone, Patsy Cline and Julie London as well as music from movies 'Wild is the Wind', 'Blue Velvet’, ’Riders in the Sky’, 'Let’s Make Love', 'Boardwalk Empire' and musicals 'Bye Bye Birdie', 'Leave It to Me!' will be presented -- unpredictable changes in mood and setting are to be expected.

Unusual arrangements of classical compositions have been made for this event -- they will be performed by one of the most sought-after and versatile Latvian pianists Andrejs Osokins and the percussionist Elvijs Endelis, known for his mastery of a wide variety of instruments, many of which will add special timbral colours to the programme. All these varied strands will be woven together by the singing of Katrina Gupalo, often characterised by dramatic contrasts and sensuality of voice, and by the expressive dancing, abundant in theatrical verve, by Gabija Bīriņa.

Previous concert show 100 YEARS WITH PIAF, which was prepared in collaboration with French Institute in Latvia, has been performed with a great success and interest of audience in twelve Latvian cities.
